Crop it. Log it. Pocket.
A smarter way to manage your small farm.
Younger generations are hesitant to go into farming due to the low financial reward for a high output of effort. Although most younger farmers believe the integration of new technologies into farming can exponentially increase income, there is currently a lack of technology for small start-up farmers. Working closely with farmers from Seedfolk City Farm, Glad-to-Know-Ya Farm and a variety of other small farmers across the U.S. we developed Pocket Plot, a small farm management system.
Pocket Plot offers a more efficient farming experience for small farmers, making farming a more viable and appealing career for millennials. The three part system enhances the tactile way farmers currently track information and turn it into a more holistic and integrated experience.
Three part system increases productivity without demanding habitual changes
A big issue with integrating management softwares into any company has to do with creating new habits. Pocket Plots aim is to create a system where natural habits become better organized for more efficiency, organization, and work-life balance within the consumers farming community. By offering multiple ways to input and manage data farmers can find systems that work best for them and align with their natural habits.
In the field, at the market, or across town input data and communicate with your farm from the convenience of your phone.
Use visual trends to compare, and improve production while managing everything that goes on within the farm.
Pocket Plot offers the natural integration of traditional handwritten notes allowing farmers to stick to traditional habits.
Archived data allows for trend optimization
On farms there is always a lot going on. While farmers are notorious for taking meticulous notes, too often these notes are misplaced or forgotten about resulting in lots of valuable data lost. By interviewing multiple farmers we identified the main points of focus on small farms where data needs to be recorded and analyzed as well as other organizational features to help the farm stay on the same page. Pocket Plot then takes that information input on mobile devices and displays trends for more effective future decsions.
View and manage all crops and varieties. Input data such as soil conditions, harvest data, seed starting, planting, and pest management.
Real time tracking of market inventory, sales and profits. Easily adjust prices, input how much is sold, and view data from other markets.
Sort, delegate and prioritize tasks. Need Barry to fix a tractor? Don’t want to pick apples alone? Make it happen from your pocket.
Keep a digital log of all notes and data with manual updates or integrated smart paper. Information input offline syncs when reconnected to internet.
Maintain work-life balance with Farming Mode
When integrating work into a personal device maintaining a work / life balance becomes tricky. Farming Mode allows you to set a schedule for when you wish to receive work-related notifications from the app. If your hands are busy or its too sunny to see the screen let Pocket Plot’s hands-off technology work for you. Simply say “Hey Pocket!” and the ear of corn is ready to listen.
Embrace tradition with smart paper integration
Many farmers jot down notes by hand— then misplace them or never look at them again. Smart paper becomes a smooth transition into digital note keeping, without a forced change of habit. Calibrated with morse code for interpretation purposes, farmers can customize and print templates from the Pocket Plot website for data input, or photograph free-hand notes to add to the log.
Manage your whole farm from your computer
More robust than the mobile version, the Pocket Plot website provides users with thorough data and charts for everything happening on the farm. Users have an in-depth view of individual charts, graphs, and data sets for any crop on the farm— in season or not. Here you can manage, compare and track the different attributes of each variety as well as customize templates for smart paper integration.
Solving problems through the design process
Pocket Plot was a large, multi-system project that required many phases of sketching, wire framing, and visual design comps to come up with the most efficient and beautiful solution. Below are some examples of how user testing and really exploring our concept helped the app develop.
